Family vacation to Alaska - May 25-June 8, 2012

We had an amazing trip to Alaska!

Our sweet Hosea is such a great traveler.  It is so fun to see the world through his eyes!

Farmer’s Market in Anchorage – such a sweet time with our friends!

David & Rachel drove us out to see Turnagain Arm & Beluga Point – so gorgeous!

Hiking around Campbell Park & Airstrip – We had to be bear conscious, as bears were out of hibernation, but not all the salmon had come yet.  A hungry bear is not your friend.  We learned about the different between a bear sighting and a bear encounter.  The latter of which is NOT OKAY!

Taxidermy is a booming industry in Alaska!  David and Rachel's neighbor had just come back from a black bear hunt.  We got to see the bear he killed in his garage.  Here is Jed holding a moose rack their neighbor had.  These antlers were HEAVY!  Moose are massive.

Jed's friend, Stephanie, picked us up in her float plane.  From Lake Hood in Anchorage, we flew to Homer, where Stephanie lives.

Inside the float plane...such an amazing experience!  Thanks, Steph!

Once we convinced Hosea to keep his headphones on, the motion and sound of the float plane instantly put him to sleep.  Sweet baby!

Flannel, trucks, Alaska...this is the life!

Breathtaking view from Stephanie's house in Homer = AMAZING!  (please note her hot tub on the left...definitely took advantage of that)

During our nine days in Homer, we had plenty of time for rest, which was so wonderful!

While Hosea napped, we got time to sit in Steph's hammock, enjoy the fresh air and mountainous backdrop, chat, and read.  This is what our souls needed!

Just one of our moose encounters...yes, we were that close to this moose.  They were everywhere...the stray dogs of Alaska...seriously!  The female moose come into Homer to have their calves, so the bears don't eat them.  Moose are actually more dangerous (cause more deaths) to humans than bears.  WHAT?!

Stephanie (and cousins Alice & Charlie) took us across Kachemak Bay to Halibut Cove, where we had a fabulous dinner at The Saltry Restaurant.  This little, secluded community is absolutely amazing!

Unfortunately, we did not catch a halibut this large when we went halibut fishing.

Jed kissing his first catch!

Bethany's first halibut

This is how you fish when you have an active, almost two year old!

Steph's boyfriend, Forrest, works on the halibut fishing boat.  Here he is fileting the fish while we head back through Kachemak Bay to Homer.

Hosea getting a little bit of time as the captain of the boat.

Our first humpback whale sighting

A family of otters

Mountains across the bay from Homer

Hiking the Beluga Slough Trail from the Islands and Ocean Visitors Center to Bishops Beach in Homer

You know you're in Alaska when...

An amazing mama moose and calf sighting

All aboard!! Kenai Fjords Tour in Seward, Alaska

Chilly weather, but calm waters for our tour - wildlife everywhere!

We saw a pod of Orca whales right next to our boat = AMAZING!

Cliffs full of seabirds - puffins were the favorite!

Traveled through Aialik Bay to reach Aialik Glacier - this is a calving glacier.  We did not see any significant chunks of ice fall into the water, but we could hear it cracking.  Our captain had to dodge icebergs to get us a close view.  It was spectacular!

After our tour, we spent the night in Seward at The Nauti Otter in this cabin.  It was a memorable experience!  This place showed us amazing hospitality.

Playground in Seward - not many parks I know that have such an amazing backdrop

Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward

Bottom line - Alaska is gorgeous!

Hike to Exit Glacier, just outside of Seward

Panoramic of Exit Glacier

Up close and personal with the glacier

Hosea was most excited about throwing rocks in the creek/river the glacier made

Drive from Seward back to Homer was sunny and gorgeous!

One last night in Homer before heading back to Anchorage

Steph flew us back to Anchorage in her float plane.  Hosea decided to poop before leaving...

Grizzly bear sighting from the air...so cool!
So thankful for a bit more time to hang out with David & Rachel in Anchorage before heading back to Fresno.  Hosea loved these two!

January-April 2012

We had many visitors during our first few months in Fresno, which was such a blessing.  We also got to take a few weekend getaways (most with our visiting family) to Yosemite, San Francisco, and Kings Canyon/Giant Sequoias.  The months of February and May brought us heartache, as Bethany experienced two pregnancies, both ending in miscarriage.

Our first trip to Yosemite National Park - we are so thankful to be just a short drive from this amazing place!
On February 16, 2012 we found out we were pregnant with a second baby.  We lost the baby on February 27.  Our hearts were grieved.

As part of our new role in Community Care at Peoples Church, we organized a service day to Rescue the Children, a new project of the Fresno Rescue Mission.  It was a wonderful day!

Weekend getaway to San Franciso to spend time with Jed's long-time friends, Ben & Joanna Stacke (who were visiting San Fran from New York City) & Sharif & Vanessa Khaleel, who live in San Mateo, CA - Hosea is obsessed with street signs...especially "curvy road" signs

A California meeting of long-time friends from MN
Ben (daughter Sophia Grace), Jed (& Hosea), and Sharif (daughter Malia)

Jed's mom (Hosea's Nana) visited us in late February 2012 - we made a trip to Yosemite and had a delicious and beautiful lunch in the historical Ahwahnee Dining room.

Yosemite Falls

In early March 2012, Bethany's parents visited - a trip to the zoo is always a blast with Hosea!
Bethany's parents managed to deconstruct, pack, and carry along a classic "Greyhound" red wagon that Bethany's grandparents had.  Here are Gramps and Daddy assmebling it - so funny to watch!

Thanks to Great Grandma & Great Grandpa for the wagon!  Hosea loves it!  Thanks to Gramps & Grandma for bringing it to Fresno.

Hosea loves his Gramps & Grandma!

Cousin Deb and cousin Cam came to visit us the end of March - we took a trip to see the Giant Sequoias and Hume Lake while they were visiting, which was a gorgeous trip!

So thankful for Deb & Cam!
Head snuggles with Daddy and kefir - life for Hosea doesn't get much better than this!

We are so thrilled to have a garden in our backyard!  Hosea and Daddy began the planting process in early April.

We have really enjoyed exploring Fresno and are particularly excited about the things that are happening to revitalize the downtown areas of Fresno.
Our sweet little boy - Hosea is a big fan of anything "ball" related.

Hosea has an affinity for baseball.  To him, all stick like objects (pencils, forks, knives, brooms, etc.) are bats and any round object he can thrwo is a baseball.  Here, Hosea is attending his first Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-baseball team) game.  HE LOVED IT! We couldn't believe that our 21 month old could sit through nearly an entire baseball game.  He was completely engrossed!

We went to the Grizzlies game while Grandma was visiting us (the end of April 2012) - thanks for taking us, Grandma!
May 7, 2012 - we found out we were pregnant with our third baby.  We lost the baby on May 16th.  These two losses have been difficult for us, but we are so thankful our babies are with their Creator.
