Day at the Park

Last week, cousin Deb organized a picnic/gathering for some of her friends and their kids, at the Clemyjontri Park in McLean, VA.  She invited us to join and we were happy to.  We enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day and amazing food at this incredible park.  The park, really more of a state of the art playground, allows children of ALL abilities to play side-by-side.  They describe themselves as being, "a place where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities, can have a parallel playground experience of fun and exploration."  All I could think when I walked up to it is, "My brother would love this place."  He is a physical education teacher with a licensure in developmental and adapted physical education.
We had a wonderful time exploring the play area, eating delicious food (characteristic of any gathering cousin Deb plans - pita bread with hummus, blue cheese chicken wraps, pasta salad, lemon bundt cake, cookies, lemonade, etc.), and hanging out together.  It was so fun to watch all the kids enjoying themselves!

First Steps

For the last two months, Hosea has been walking all around our house, but always having one or two hands on something (couch, chair, etc.) or holding onto mom or dad's hands.  Recently, he has been standing freely, holding onto nothing for up to 30 seconds at a time.  He has also been using a walker to motor around.  But, up until TODAY has been a little leary to take steps on his own.
It happened today...May 14, 2011 (just a few days after Hosea turned 10 months old)!  Hosea Jedidiah von Steinbergs took his first steps!  Not one steps, not two steps, but five full steps in a row!  Way to go, buddy.  We are so proud of you!  Sorry that we were so excited we forgot to catch you.

Grandparents are the greatest!

Holy smokes!  It has been more than three weeks since I posted last.  During that time, we have had visits from Nana and from Gramps and Grandma.  Debby/Jed's mom/Nana came to visit us from April 8-21.  She had a conference to attend during a few days of her visit, but the rest of the time she spent with us.  She generously let us use the pool at her hotel while she attended the conference.  It was Hosea's first time in a swimming pool and he LOVED it.  We predicted he would because of the sheer delight he has when splashing in the bathtub.  Some highlights from our time with Nana: a trip to the National Zoo, Metro ride on a stormy afternoon to Crystal City Underground shops (which were closed by the time we arrived, but we still got to enjoy a nice dinner together there), several walks around Falls Church with the boys, admiring the beauty of spring, Bethany & Hosea watching Nana and Jed play tennis together, a trip to Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets, a trip to IKEA to purchase Hosea his first real crib/toddler bed and enjoy their delicious cafeteria for lunch, Palm Sunday service at The Falls Church and a yummy Italian lunch at Pistone's afterwards, and lunch at Great-Aunt Rebecca and Great-Uncle Arlyn's house.

Gary & Nancy/Bethany's parents/Gramps & Grandma visited us from April 28-30.  Originally, we planned to see my parents over Easter weekend.  They were staying at a timeshare in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and invited us to join them.  About three hours into our journey to Myrtle Beach, we learned that the timeshare did not allow dogs (even on the premises) and we had Caesar and Poncho with us, as usual.  Bethany's parents generously offered to end their vacation at their time share a few days early and drive to Falls Church, VA on their way back to Wisconsin from Myrtle Beach.  That way, we wouldn't have a stress of finding alternative care for our dogs, we wouldn't need to continue our long road trip with a kiddo who dislikes the car, and they would still get to spend time with us.  We were bummed about not getting to spend time at the beach, but it ended up working out to be a blessing in disguise.  We called Przemek, my Polish brother, who is in the Navy and stationed in Norfolk, VA, and he was going to be around the following day.  So, we spent the night in a motel in the Petersburg, VA area and then drove to Norfolk, VA the next morning.  We got to spend a few hours with Przemek, getting a tour of the Norfolk Naval Base and more importantly, a tour of his ship, the USS Gonzalez.  It was amazing!

All three of us trying to cram into Przemek's bed - I couldn't even bear to watch :)
Przemek told us that we were only 20-30 minutes away from Virginia Beach, so we decided to stop there on our way home.  Hosea got to experience an East Coast Beach after all!  We drove though the touristy area of downtown Virginia Beach, but actually got out and walked the beach just north of town.  It was a beautiful day.  Hosea LOVED the beach...the waves, the textures, the wind, and mostly...the sand.  He successfully ate and swallowed an entire fist-full of sand.  Wow!  We arrived back in Falls Church Saturday evening and were able to enjoy Easter service at our home church here, The Falls Church.  It was a wonderful weekend, despite the change in plans.

Hmmm...this beach has sand

YAY!!!!!

This is the best!

Celebrating Easter!
Grandma & Gramps arrived on Thursday late afternoon (April 28th).  We had a great time with them.  We enjoyed a family dinner (with all members in our house) on Thursday night.  Hosea and I went shopping with Grandma on Friday morning.  We looked for a dress for my mom to wear to my brother's wedding this summer and we found a great one.  While we were shopping, Jed and my dad visited the National Air and Space Museum in DC.  We met up with them later in the afternoon and enjoyed lunch and a walk around the US Capitol and the Supreme Court.  We also walked around the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, which was really spectacular.  We enjoyed Memphis-style BBQ take-out for dinner and crashed after a busy day.  On Saturday, my dad and Jed worked on building Hosea's first crib (which converts to a toddler bed).  It is a super cute, practical one from IKEA.  My parents and Jed's mom gifted Hosea this crib for an early birthday present.  Hosea was getting a little too long for his port-a-crib, so it seemed like the right time to get him a new bed.  I found some clearance fabric at IKEA and our Aunt Ann Hoppe, whom we live with, created a beautiful duvet cover, top sheet, and matching pillows out of it.  It looks so wonderful! Hosea is really enjoying his new bed.  He still wakes us every two hours at night, but he is enjoying those two hour stints of sleep much more.  :)

Hosea loves his Gramps!

Hosea loves his grandparents and I think the feeling is mutual.  :)  Jed and I have also enjoyed having our parents around.  Their presence is a gift.  We are so thankful for parents who love the Lord and who love us so well...more than we deserve.  A big thank you to Nana and Gramps & Grandma for visiting us.

Family Day

We've been attending a 5 PM Saturday evening service at our church, here in Falls Church.  Last weekend, we decided to make Sunday (April 3rd), a family day.  After being very busy and having visitors, it is always good to have a day for just the three of us.  My brother and his fiance, Sarah, gave us a Virginia State Parks pass for Christmas (what an amazing, creative gift, huh?) and we had yet to use it.  We decided to explore Shenandoah River State Park, which is just over an hour drive, west of where we live.  We enjoyed a lunch at Five Guys Burgers on our way to the park and we hiked there for several hours.  It was a beautiful, partly cloudy spring day.  It was our first major hiking trip with Hosea.  He spent most of our first hike (Wildcat Ledge - a difficult, steep .4 mile round trip trail to a park overlook) sleeping, but woke up to enjoy our second hike along the river (River Trail - an easy 4 mile round trip trail).  We stopped about half way through our second hike to enjoy a snack along the river.  Hosea loved playing in the grass and looking at the river.
Today, April 11th, is Hosea's 9 month birthday.  I am still amazed that Jed and I have a son at all, let alone a 9 month old one.  God is so good to us.  One of my favorite things about spending time with Jed is how easy it is just to "be" in his presence.  We don't have to talk much, however, we do love to process and reflect on life with one another.  Jed is my best friend.  Spending time together on a day like this one, reminds me how blessed I am to walk life with a godly husband. Having a strong foundation in our walks with the Lord and in our marriage is crucial, even more now that we have a son.  On our hike, we stopped and read A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants.  It has been an amazing guide for us to get into the Scriptures, individually and with one another.  The devotional has an invocation, one specific Psalm to be read repeatedly throughout the week, daily scripture readings, a selection of readings for reflection, a time for prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself, time for reflection: written and silent, a hymn, and a benediction.  We highly recommend it as a devotional.  The Sunday of our hike was the 4th Sunday in Lent and the weekly psalm was Psalm 143.  I was struck by verse 10, which says, "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.  May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on firm footing."  God, that is the desire of Jed and my heart...we want to do Your will.  Graciously lead us forward (as Your sons and daughters, as husband and wife, and as parents) on firm footing.
Lunch at Five Guys.  Good pre-hiking food - yummy!

Fish, Family, and Flowers

FISH
On Saturday, March 26th, cousins Deb and Cam joined Jed and I for a day at the Baltimore Aquarium.  Jed's friend from college, Scott Ensor, was able to get us a deal on some passes.  So, we joined the Ensor family (Scott and his wife, Amy, and their two kids as well as Scott's brother and sister-in-law and their two kids) and had a fun afternoon looking at some amazing underwater life.
Unfortunately, this is the only group shot we captured (Scott's wife, Amy, is hidden behind the woman in glasses who was not a part of our group)
FAMILY
On Monday, March 28th, Jed's sister (Lisl) and niece (Daria) arrived from Minnesota for a visit.  Daria was on spring break, so the two of them road-tripped to Falls Church to spend time with us and the rest of the family in our home.  Hosea loved spending time with his cousin Daria.  Daria is such a sweet, smart girl.  She was wonderful with Cameron and Hosea and could always make them laugh.  Hosea got lots of lovin' from his Auntie Lisl.  He also got lots of practice walking and standing with her.  Hosea decided to show off to his Auntie Lisl by doing his "Wookiee" impression (check out video below).  We are so thankful for our family.  Thanks for visiting, Lisl and Daria!

FLOWERS
While Lisl and Daria were visiting, we (Deb, Cam, Lisl, Daria, Jed, Hosea, and I) went to the National Cherry Blossom Festival in downtown DC.  It happens around the Jefferson Memorial, where there are more than 2,000 cherry trees.  Crazy, huh?!  Even though it was a cold, overcast day, the cherry blossoms were gorgeous.  We got some of our best views of them from the shuttle bus, which took us took and from where our car was parked....a long way away from the festival.  Cherry blossoms draw crowds!  It was great to be with family enjoying the outdoors.  The changing of seasons is so refreshing and reminds me how God makes all things new - He is the Author of life!
